Plant Description
Tomato ‘Shirley’ is a greenhouse variety that’s hard to beat! Early to fruiting and very
heavy cropping, it is a short-jointed, robust plant that is easy to grow. It produces
uniform, high-quality, round red fruits with excellent flavour, making it ideal for
gardeners seeking reliable and productive greenhouse tomatoes.
To grow Shirley plant out in a greenhouse after the last frost. Provide support with
canes or strings, remove side shoots as needed, keep the soil consistently moist,
and feed weekly with a high-potash tomato fertiliser once the first fruits set.
With regular care and harvesting, Shirley offers an abundant and early crop of tasty
tomatoes, perfect in a salad or to eat on their own as a snack.
As a young man, I watched my father grow this variety in the old Westdock venlo glasshouses. We planted them after an early flat lettuce crop, in late April. Once they established, they performed well, and have the benefit of producing good sized fruit throughout the season. Its one variety I actually like to still grow myself, particularly as the fruit has a really good summer flavour.
Why choose Rowlands Plants?
We are a family-run nursery that has been growing strong, healthy, vigorous plant since 1957.
What does pot diameter mean?
Pot diameter is measured along the top of each pot to give an indication of overall plant size on arrival.
We only offer plants in 13cm or 11cm pots. This means that plants are established and ready to be planted straight into your garden as soon as they arrive.
