Saxifraga Marto Picotee Red

Saxifraga Marto ‘Picotee Red’ is a compact, evergreen perennial known for its delicate and eye-catching flowers. Blooming in early spring, it features small star-shaped blooms in white with distinctive deep pink edges—known as a "picotee" pattern—and bright yellow centres. These vibrant flowers rise above tight mounds of mossy, green foliage, creating a beautiful contrast of colour and texture.

Reaching a height of around 10–14 cm and spreading 15–17 cm, it forms neat, cushion-like clumps. This makes it perfect for rock gardens, border edging, alpine troughs, containers, and balcony boxes.

Saxifraga enjoys a position in full sun to partial shade, with morning sun and afternoon shade being the most favourable.  It performs best in well-drained soil that remains consistently moist, though care should be taken to avoid waterlogging, which can harm the plant’s roots.

Flowering begins as early as March and continues through to early summer, providing a long-lasting display of delicate, star-shaped blooms. This plant is very low maintenance, making it ideal for both new and experienced gardeners. However, it is important not to let the soil stay too wet during the winter months, as excess moisture during dormancy can lead to root issues.

In addition to its ornamental value, Saxifraga ‘Red Picotee’ attracts early pollinators like bees, making it a great choice for gardeners who want to add both visual interest and ecological value to their garden early in the season.
