Plant Description
A twist on the other sages, the Tricolour Salvia (Sage) has tricolour leaves, with pink, white and purple variegation. The plants tend to be less bushy that 'Icterina' and 'Purpurea', but still form an attractive foliage plant suitable for planting in a cottage herb garden.
Tricolour is still as hardy as the other sages, likes to be planted in a well drained soil, enjoying exposure to full sun. This sage tends to be more ornamental than 'Purpurea' and 'Icterina', but the leaves are aromatic, and can be used as a flavour, in cooking.
Tricolour once established has a height of between 18-24" (45-60cm), with a spread of 18" (45cm). gain, this is a perfect companion plant for use in borders or containers, please make sure you prevent the plant from becoming waterlogged, as this can kill the plant over the winter period.
Flowering tends to happen once the plant has become established, the flowering period is between spring and early summer. The flowers are similar to other sages, tubular in appearance, forming in spike like clusters. Again, the plant acts as a pollinator in the garden, attracting bees and insects.
Once established, this plant should grow for many years, and will benefit from the application of fertilizer in the spring, to promote new growth. It would also benefit from being mulched to suppress weed growth.
The plant makes a useful companion plant for a culinary herb garden.
