Pumpkin 'Atlantic Giant'

Pumpkin ‘Atlantic Giant’ is a truly impressive variety, famous for producing enormous
fruits and a favourite at shows and competitions. To grow it well, choose the
sunniest, most sheltered spot you can find and prepare the ground with plenty of
well-rotted manure or compost, as these pumpkins are hungry feeders. Plant outside
once the frosts have passed. Give each plant plenty of room, at least a couple of
metres, because the vines will sprawl and grow vigorously.

Keep the soil moist, especially in dry weather and when the fruits begin to swell and
feed weekly once the pumpkins are setting. If you want to grow a giant, allow just
one or two fruits to develop on the strongest vine and remove any others so all the
plant’s energy goes into them. Place the pumpkins on a piece of wood or straw as
they grow to stop the skins from rotting on the damp soil.

By autumn the pumpkins will ripen to a deep orange, with tough skins that store well.
Harvest them with a long stalk and leave them to cure in the sun or a dry, airy place
before storing.
