Plant Description

When one thinks of lavender, one always assumes it will be the two staples, Hidcote or Munstead. Modern breeding and selection processes have taken the crop to a new level. Lavender Blue Spear is a modern compact,  early blooming variety of English Lavender, which is truly stunning. It has compact vibrant blue-purple flowers, which come from a bushy plant with neat growth habit.

Its growing height is about 10 -12 inches (25-30cm) with a lateral spread of about 25 cm. The foliage is silver green, with narrow leaves. The plant is extremely oleiferous, that is it has a high content of lavender oil in its leaves. This is very evident the moment the foliage is brushed and felt.

Flowering time is from summer through to late summer. One of the other key features of this variety is that it has an extended flowering period when compared to other lavenders. You should prune the plant after flowering to maintain a bushy habit. Do not over feed it, too much nitrogen will supress flowering. It is essential to keep good air circulation around the plant to ensure it is healthy, this will minimise fungal diseases.

Planting should be in a free draining soil, which is slightly alkaline or neutral. Once established, Blue Spear is drought tolerant, and enjoys full exposure to sunlight.
Blue Spear is a bee magnet and is attractive to all the other pollinators. It is a hardy plant, and one I would recommend if you like the smell of lavender.

What does pot diameter mean?

Pot diameter is measured along the top of each pot to give an indication of overall plant size on arrival.

We only offer plants in 13cm or 11cm pots. This means that plants are established and ready to be planted straight into your garden as soon as they arrive.

*Our specially designed boxes require no plastic inners. The plant pots are (recyclable) plastic.
